The control panel had been set to Super Freeze and had run for three days.

On most Hisense models from the last few years, a single snowflake means normal freeze, a snowflake with an arrow or asterisk means Super Freeze, and a fan icon usually means Power Cool or Rapid Cooling. A water droplet icon is usually humidity control. But those symbols change by model family. As of January 2025, Hisense's support pages still organize symbols by model. Verify yours by checking the sticker inside the fresh food compartment or the manual before you touch any buttons.

2. Why is my Hisense mini fridge cooling poorly?

Check the basics before you call for a sealed-system repair. I made that mistake in 2019: I approved a compressor diagnosis for a Hisense mini fridge that wasn't cooling. The repair tech replaced the thermostat. It didn't fix it. The real problem was $12 worth of dust on the condenser coil and a door gasket that had curled enough to let cold air escape.

For a Hisense mini fridge, I now follow a simple order: clean the condenser coil (usually behind the front grille), test the door gasket by closing it on a piece of paper—if you can pull the paper out without resistance, the seal is weak—and make sure there's at least two inches of clearance around the unit. On a typical refrigerator in a normal room, the compressor surface can get to 150-170°F (65-75°C). I've measured compressors on our Hisense units with a cheap infrared thermometer; the ones running fine sat in that range. The ones that were overheating read closer to 200°F (93°C) and were off because the overload protector had tripped.

The phrase 'hot to the touch' isn't useful by itself. The question is whether the appliance is cooling. If the compressor is hot but the freezer is at temperature and the fridge cycles on and off, you're probably fine. If the compressor is hot and the fridge isn't cooling, that's when you need a technician. And if the compressor doesn't turn on at all, don't assume the 'hot' part is the issue—check the start relay before ordering a new compressor. I've wasted about $1,400 on that exact assumption.

4. Shark robot vacuum troubleshooting: why does it stop mid-floor?

The most frustrating part of Shark robot vacuum troubleshooting from my side: the robot usually doesn't give you a useful error. It just stops. The first time I sent a tech to look at a Shark unit that stopped in the middle of a living room, he ordered a new battery. That wasn't the problem—well, it wasn't the only problem. That said, if you've cleaned everything and the robot still throws an error like 'Bot is stuck' or 'Right wheel cannot turn,' check Shark's support site for the specific code. Error codes aren't universal across models.

5. LG washer machine error codes: which ones should worry you?

I'll be honest with you: I don't fix LG washers myself. But I approve the repair orders, and I've seen enough error codes to know which ones are misdiagnosed.

'OE' means the machine isn't draining fast enough. 'UE' means unbalanced load. 'LE' means a motor lock or stator issue. And 'CL' is just the child lock. The mistake I made in 2022: I saw 'UE' on a tenant's LG washer machine and told them to just press Start again. That works sometimes. But this washer was on a cracked vinyl floor, and the legs were so uneven the drum couldn't balance. Pressing Start made it worse. A new drain pump was ordered before we checked the floor. $380 wasted.

So the first thing to check with any LG washer error is the manual. Most codes tell you the condition, not the fix. OE can be a clogged drain pump filter or a kinked hose. UE can be a leveling issue or an overloading issue. LE can be a stuck object in the pump or an actual motor problem. Verify the exact code for your model, and if the error reappears, record the sequence. That sequence matters more than the single code.

6. What's the most expensive mistake you can make while troubleshooting appliances?

The most expensive mistake is assuming the expensive part is broken before you check the cheap stuff. I've done it. I've seen our team do it. The worst case was a property manager who insisted a Hisense refrigerator needed a new compressor because it 'wasn't cold enough.' The compressor was hot, yes—but the condenser fan was dead. The compressor couldn't reject heat, so it ran hot and the fridge slowly warmed up. The fan was $45. The compressor repair quote was $680.
